2008 CMS White by Hedges, Columbia Valley
Paul Gregutt's top 100 list for November 2009. 2007 CMS Red by Hedges, Columbia Valley A wonderfully fragrant blend, supple and loaded with berries and darker notes of licorice and coffee. This is a sophisticated and European style-meaning lighter alcohol and less sugar-but in return you get substance and grip. Though it's built for near-term drinking, there's nothing light or insubstantial here; and the mouthfeel is that of a much more expenisve wine. 89 pnts-Wine Enthusiast Magazine, November 2009 2004 Hedges Family Estate Two Vineyards, Cabernet Sauvignon-Syrah, Red Mountain "This limited (350 cases) selection tastes strongly of bourbon barrel, with red fruits in a supporting role. Syrah adds some focus and spice; it's a good match. Young, tight and compact, may benefit from additional cellaring." -Paul Gregutt
-90 pnts - Wine Enthusiast Magazine, August 2007 2004 Hedges Family Estate Three Vineyards, Red Mountain "Concentrated and showing a whiff of volatility, this is a blend of 62% Merlot, 33% Cabernet Sauvignon, and a splash each of Cab Franc and Petit Verdot. Grapes are sourced from three different estate vineyards on Red Mountain. It's acidic and extracted, but opens up with exposure to air into a supple, rich, muscular, raspberry and cherry-flavored red blend. There are hints of rock, fennel and smoke, and a long, concentrated and well-rounded finish." -Paul Gregutt -90 pnts - Wine Enthusiast Magazine, August 2007 2005 CMS Red by Hedges, Columbia Valley "For the first time this popular blend contains no Yakima Valley fruit. The savvy blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Syrah works like a charm. Outside of the Ste. Michelle brands, this is probably the most consistent, balanced and expressive red wine blend that is value-priced and widely available from Washington State. It's elegant, somewhat European in style, with light, polished fruit flavors of plum, berry and cherry." -Paul Gregutt -BEST BUY - Wine Enthusiast Magazine, August 2007 2003 Hedges Family Estate Three Vineyards, Cabernet Sauvignon-Merlot, Red Mountain "There is so much to enjoy about this wine including the under $30 price tag. Brilliant ruby, with bright mint, cassis and vanilla aromas. Very forward and young without being simply fruity. Juicy and fresh yet firm on the palate with excellent balance. Certainly oaky, but it is well integrated into the concentrated fruit flavors. The finish is long with a juicy, youthful fruit that will evolve into something more complicated with a few years of bottle age. You have to love the structure of these Washington wines, which clearly remind one more of Bordeaux than Napa." -Wine Camp Blog and Forum, Craig Camp "Color: Deep dark ruby with purple tint, semi-opaque. Smoky, sweet spicy overtones frame the cherry and blueberry fruit aromas. The mouthfeel is medium to full bodied, with good concentration and huge dusty, rocky tannins. Layers of red and blue fruit plus sweet spicy oak reverberate as the wine finishes warm, young and firm. " -Wine Waves, Jerry Hall "Dark and lovely, the aromas remind of those jelly black raspberry candies, with a touch of smoky oak barrel. It’s full and finely tannic right up front, and perhaps a bit reticent about following it up with the fruit, but it does eventually come. Mostly that black raspberry, but some nice black cherry, too. It feels cool, well-built and ripe, so perhaps the complexity it lacks now will be forthcoming after a bit more age. The finish is dominated by tannic dryness, but a bit of medicinal cherry crops up in there too, throwing the show off. Impressive persistence, though." -Chad's Wine Blog Four Stars. Houston Chronicle, July 2006 "Mostly merlot and cabernet, with dollops of cabernet franc and syrah; good red fruit with a hint of eucalyptus, and good balance." 2004 CMS Red by Hedges, Columbia Valley "They specialize in Bordeaux blends that could pass for double or even 3-4 times the price in Napa Valley, if you could coax out the complex and finessed alchemy from such a heated southern source." "Deep ruby with bright edges and a slight haze. Aromas: Blackberry, black cherry, smoky lightly toasty and bacony oak, with hints of black licorice and black coffee. The mouthfeel is almost full-bodied with bold gravelly tannins." -WineWaves, Jerry Hall Pick of the Week. Seattle Times, June, 2006
Pick of the Week. Seattle Times, June, 20063 1/2 Stars. Houston Chronicle, July 2006 "The initials stand for cabernet sauvignon, merlot and syrah; slightly rustic red wine from a difficult vintage; flavors of red and black fruit, with hints of anise and vanilla." "The white is mostly C (chardonnay) and S (sauvignon blanc) with a splash of marsanne providing the M. The sauv blanc lifts it, giving it vivid acid and bright herb; the chardonnay fills in round apple and pear flavors, and the little bit of marsanne adds peach to the fruit." 3 1/2 Stars. Houston Chronicle, July 2006 "The initials stand for chardonnay, marsanne and sauvignon blanc; an unusual blend, with very good acidity and a flavor profile of grapefruit, pear and minerals..." |
